As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, it’s easy to see why so many travelers book flights to Skopje every year.

North Macedonia’s capital city, Skopje is also the country’s largest urban center and its main economic and business hub. Skopje and its surrounding metro area are home to nearly one million people. Although North Macedonia is a relatively new country—it became an independent republic in 1991—the city of Skopje has existed for thousands of years. The remains of settlements from the Neolithic era have been discovered there. The city also played a role in the Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Serbian Empires. Before Skopje became the capital of North Macedonia, it was part of the country of Serbia and, prior to that, part of the former Soviet Republic of Yugoslavia.

Flights to Skopje arrive at Skopje International Airport (SKP), which is located in the suburb of Petrovec, about twelve miles east of the city center. Direct flights to Skopje are available from many cities in Europe, including Athens, Greece; Vienna, Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; Zurich, Switzerland; Brussels, Belgium; Istanbul, Turkey; London, England; and Rome, Italy.
