The largest city and capital of the Greek island of Crete, Heraklion is known for its rich archeological sites, some of which date back to the Bronze Age, about 3300 to 1200 BCE. The fourth-largest city in Greece, Heraklion has a population of about 200,000 people, with an additional 12,000 living outside the city in its suburban area.

Kazantzakis was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature nine times for his novels Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ.

 

In addition to Nikos Kazantzakis, several notable people are from or lived for a time in Heraklion. These include painter Domenicos Theotokopoulos, commonly known as El Greco, who was a significant contributor to the Spanish Renaissance during the 17th century. Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseas Elytis, fashion model Maria Spiridaki, movie director Yannis Smaragdis, and architect Spyros Kokotos were all from Heraklion.
