Estonia’s largest city and capital, Tallinn, is located on the Baltic Sea coast and is home to about 440,000 people. The city’s Old Town is home to a well-preserved fortification wall and other medieval architecture that makes Tallinn popular with tourists. Tallinn is the country’s cultural and financial hub as well as a major Baltic Sea port. The city is located within 50 miles of Helsinki, Finland, and within 200 miles of Saint Petersburg, Russia; Stockholm, Sweden; and Riga, Latvia.
Flights to Tallinn, Estonia, arrive at Lennart Meri Tallinn International Airport (TLL). The airport, Estonia’s largest, is located just three miles south of the city center. It serves as a hub for Nordica Airlines and Air Baltic Airlines, and handles about 1.3 million passengers each year.
Most of the visitors who fly to Tallinn visit the city’s Old Town, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Built in the 13th century, the Old Town of Tallinn is considered to be one of the best preserved medieval cities in Estonia and Europe. Among the Old Town’s most iconic sites is the Toompea Castle, which was built in the early 1200s. The castle is located on a hill overlooking the city’s port. Throughout its history, the castle has been home to the seat of Estonia’s government. Today, Toompea Castle houses Estonia’s parliament.
Other Old Town attractions popular with visitors who book flights to Tallinn are the Town Hall Square, which is a wide pedestrian mall that is home to several shops, restaurants, and cafes. Tourists also visit Saint Olaf’s Church, built in the 12th century; the Church of the Holy Spirit, a medieval Lutheran church built in the early 13th century; and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, built in the 19th century.
Since Estonia became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991, Tallinn has developed a market economy. In addition to shipping, energy production, and tourism, the city is also home to a strong information technology sector.
Many of the business people who fly to Tallinn work in the tech industry. The widely used virtual meeting platform, Skype, began as a Tallinn start-up company. The city is considered one of Europe’s most important technology hubs. It is home to NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, an international military organization that develops cyber defense strategies and secure information-sharing technologies. Large technology companies such as the Swedish multinational telecommunications firm TeliaSonera and the Swiss logistics company Kuehne + Nagel International have based their IT development centers in Tallinn.
Tallinn is also Estonia’s financial hub. It is home to the Tallinn Stock Exchange and is an important banking center for the Baltic region. Several large banks in the region have offices in the city, including Swedbank and Nordea Bank.
Tourism is also a significant part of Tallinn’s economy. More than 4 million visitors fly to Tallinn each year, mostly during the summer months. The majority of Tallinn’s visitors are from Europe, with a large percentage coming from nearby Scandinavian countries such as Finland and Sweden. Tallinn is also a popular vacation destination for tourists from Asia.
Cheap flights to Tallinn are often booked by students from the Baltic region who come to the city to attend one of its universities. These include the Tallinn Institute of Technology; Tallinn University; the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences; and the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics.
Estonia’s official language is Estonian, which is spoken by the majority of people in Tallinn. Many people in the city also speak Russian, Ukrainian, and Finnish. English is also widely spoken in the city, especially by people who work in the tourism industry and in international business.
