Venice is an Italian city that sits in the Northeastern part of the country and is made up of 118 small islands that are separated by water channels and connected by many bridges. The city sits in the marshy Venetian Lagoon and stretches along its shoreline, between the mouths of the rivers Piave and Po. Venice is renowned for its beauty and is home to some of the best and most unique architecture and artwork in the world. The city, together with its lagoon, are both listed as World Heritage Sites. It's pretty remarkable to see in person. Albeit less relaxing, and enjoyable if you can't take a business class flight to Venice, we recommend you go any way!
As of 2009, the city, which is the capital of Italy’s Veneto region, had a population of about 270,098 residents. The estimated number of people living around the Venezia Commune is estimated to be about 272,000; with about 60,000 people residing in the historic city itself. Venice, together with Treviso and Padua, make up the PATREVE or Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan area, which is home to about 2,600,000 people.
The History of Venice
The city derives its name from ancient Veneti people who were living in the region by around the 10th century. Historically, it was the capital city of the Republic of Venice. During the Middle Ages, the Republic was considered a significant maritime power and was an important staging area for Crusades and played an important role during the Battle of Lepanto. At the same time, it was an important commerce (especially in the trade of spices, grain and silk) and art center. It is aspects like these that made the city a wealthy municipal.
Apart from the above, Venice is also known for its artistic movements with the most influential era being during the Renaissance Period. Venice, as a republic, lost most of its influence after the Napoleonic Wars. After the Congress of Vienna, it was taken over by the Austrian Empire until it eventually became a part of the Kingdom of Italy in the year 1866 after a referendum was conducted as a result of the 3rd Italian War of Independence.
For a greater part of its existence, Venice has been playing an important role in the history of operatic and symphonic music and is the birthplace of renowned artists like Antonio Vivaldi. Which, if I confess - is actually one of my favorite musicians. I don't think there would be anything better than listening to Vivaldi on the way in aboard a business class flight then to arrive and experience the history of which he grew up in and came from.
