If you've been looking for a newer, more affordable way to book a business class flight, the CEO of Malaysia Airlines, Christoph Mueller, has been looking at a number of options with you in mind. Despite the struggling nature of the airline, he's looking a way for passengers to book much cheaper business class tickets if they opt to go without frequent flyer points and lounge access. There has also been hints that it will be easier when it comes to booking a more flexible itinerary, which makes it possible for the passenger to fly economy for the first leg of the trip, then flying business on the return.
Mueller mentioned to Aviation Week while in attendance at the International Air Transport Association in Florida that he is looking forward to the airline becoming what is known as a "value carrier" where they are able to offer up basic products with some of the options for premium perks if the passenger is willing to pay the difference.
Believe it or not, the breakdown of airfare bundles is not new, however it has generally be limited to low cost carriers that are offering economy class fares, including Scoot and Air Asia X.
With Malaysia Airlines being in the middle of a hefty restructuring, taking on a new name, selling some of their equipment, letting go of a large number of employees and taking off the routes that are not profitable have all become a reality. It is important now for the company to go modular so that their passengers have the ability to build upon their own experience. Mueller noted that a customer may be able to book a seat that is business class, however they have the ability to opt out of the lounge access or even the miles, whereas other systems may not be able to deliver that.
This is an investment that will include information technology along with an IT infrastructure that will allow for a newer booking engine. Such a platform will allow people to work on building their own product. This is a model that will be done mostly through selling tickets in a direct manner to consumers instead of travel agents. Being an airline that has been hit with a lot of debt, there were even more troubles with the air incidents involving both flight MH17 and flight MH370. If you are looking into booking cheap business class tickets, the time is coming soon with Malaysia Airlines.
