The capital of the small Eastern European country of Moldova, Chisinau is also that country’s largest city. Located on the Bic River in the central part of the country, Chisinau is home to about 533,000 people. Chisinau’s greater metro area, including its suburbs, includes a population of about 700,000 people, nearly one-third of Moldova’s population. 

 

Flights to Chisinau, Moldova, arrive at Chisinau International Airport (KIV). The airport is located about eight miles south of the city. It is the hub for Moldova’s national flag carrier, Air Moldova, as well as Fly One and High Sky airlines. Since the time that Moldova became part of the former Soviet Union, Chisinau has been an industrial city. Most of Moldova’s media companies are also located in Chisinau, including newspapers, television networks, and radio stations.

One of the region’s most popular attractions is the Milestii Mici winery’s wine cellar, the largest wine cellar in the world, which is located beneath Chisinau. Housed in a former limestone mine, which helps maintain the proper humidity and temperate throughout the year, the Milestii Mici cellar holds more than 2 million bottles of wine and includes a tasting room. Tours of the wine cellar are available daily. Of the 2 million bottles stored at Milestii Mici, more than 70% are red wines, with the remainder being white and dessert wines. 

 

Visitors also book flight tickets to Chisinau to view the city’s famous Soviet-era brutalist and social realist architecture as well as its older, more historic buildings. One of the city’s oldest buildings is the wooden Church of the Dormition of Mary of Hiriseni, which was built in 1642. The church is preserved as part of Chisinau’s Village Museum.

 

Although Chisinau is a small city, it is home to more than twenty universities, both public and private. Students from other parts of Eastern Europe and around the world take cheap flights to Chisinau in order to study there. Among the city’s most popular universities is Moldova State University, which has an enrollment of more than 20,000 students. Other universities in the city include the Academy of Sciences of Moldova; the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova; and the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy. 

 

A handful of museums are also located in Chisinau. These include Moldova’s National History Museum and the National Museum of Fine Arts, which has more than 135,000 works of art in its collection.

 

Notable people who were born in or who have lived in Chisinau include classical violin player Patricia Kopatchinskaja; classical composer Eugen Doga; mathematician Israel Gohberg; and the Academy Award-winning film director, Lewis Milestone. Milestone is known for directing the original Ocean’s 11Mutiny on the Bounty, and All Quiet on the Western Front, among many other classic films.
